Telling your story
We would like you to explore the theme of a self-portrait. A self portrait is a picture that reflects something of who you are. Here are 3 ways in which you could do this:
Self-portrait with a single line:
Here’s a simple yet effective way of creating your own self-portrait. To create a self portrait you need a sheet of paper and a pen. Your aim is to draw a picture of yourself using only one continuous line. The challenge is that once you put the pen to the paper and begin to draw you should try not to lift the pen off the paper until you finish. See how far you get - it's a fun activity - don't worry too much about what the end result looks like. This is a method that Picasso used.
I am:
Another way of creating a self portrait is through representing all the things that make you, you. Here’s an example of how to do this in collage. Think about who you are, what you enjoy, the roles that you cherish. Try to think of 10 statements beginning with 'I am"It might help to ask others what they would describe you as.
Examples:
‘I am a movie lover’
’I am an auntie’
’I am a problem solver’
You could either have this as a list of words of look through magazines and newspapers and try to make a collage that captures all the elements of what makes you who you are.
My life in 3 objects
Look around your home and see if you can find 3 objects that you associate with positive memories. It might be something that reminds you of a lovely holiday (a shell or a pebble) or of an occasion (a photograph of a wedding or a Birthday) or it could be something about a texture or a colour of an object you like and find meaningful.
Spend time choosing the objects and then think about or talk about why you have chosen these. You could even arrange them in some way, and take a photograph of them - a bit like a sculpture.
